What is iGEM ??
iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) is a competition that gathers university students from around the world to present their projects about innovative biological machines, with ecological, health and biotechnological purposes.
The competition is sponsored by the iGEM foundation, based at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). This foundation is dedicated to education, competition, and innovation in synthetic biology, through the development of an open community of collaborations. This year the foundation became independent from MIT, while still being located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It now has an independent non-for-profit status.
Our participation in the contest will showcase UdL, its community, students, and research internationally, alongside such prestigious universities as Cambridge or Harvard. This will provide a boost in the recognition of the role of this University in innovative ventures in its region and country. We could also encourage other universities to participate and provide inspiration for future student groups. Sponsors of iGEM are very important entities like NASA or Agilent.
Competition
Student teams have a kit of biological components to choose from at their disposal. This kit comes from a registry of standard biological parts. Our project work is to be developed at the university, using those parts and pieces in order to build and use new biological systems in living cells. The competition format is a teaching method especially motivating and effective.
